Research abstract

Under this proposed effort, NAVSYS will leverage our expertise with developing ultra-low power GPS solutions to develop a software GPS receiver solution that can be embedded into military software defined radios (SDR) for handheld, unattended sensors and weapon applications. The objective of this effort is to develop a lightweight GPS application “GPS-Lite” which is capable of performing PPS GPS positioning within the JTRS HMS Soldier Radio using a plug-in GPS “snaphot” device to receive the raw GPS signals. The resulting solution will also be extensible to all tactical radio form factors and adaptable to unattended sensor and weapon use. Under the Phase II effort we will develop and demonstrate an SDR GPS-Lite application capable of providing a C/A code solution in the JTRS HMS Core Radio-1 using Network Assisted GPS (NAG) services to speed initialization. We shall also develop and demonstrate a GPS-Lite2 application that can generate a PPS solution in a JTRS-HMS radio using NAG services from a Server to deliver SAASM assistance and allow calculation of a PPS navigation solution without requiring crypto processing within the JTRS-HMS radio. This approach will support computation of a PPS solution for applications such as Unattended Ground Sensors (UGS) without requiring crypto equipment (such as is within a SAASM receiver) to be left unattended in the field. The Phase II design efforts will also provide material to support the development of a GPS security architecture that can result in integrating the GPS security processing within a JTRS crypto processor allowing a Type 1 JTRS radio platform to compute a PPS solution with or without NAG services.
