Research abstract

The objective of this proposal is to produce an urgently needed, highly effective optimized laser module (OLM) design for defeating a new class of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) based on laser activated devices and other optical triggering mechanisms. The OLM will offer reduced size, weight and power consumption required for integration into infrared countermeasure systems suitable for use on manned or unmanned vehicles. This phase will incorporate important findings from the Phase I study, as well as subsequent research results. The scope of this development will be expanded to include enhanced effectiveness against optical triggering mechanisms. Multidimensional design optimization of the OLM will be performed in temporal, spatial, and spectral domains to achieve the highest level of countermeasure effectiveness against IEDs. The OLM will stimulate the optical triggering mechanisms at ranges that will measurably reduce or eliminate the lethality of the IED attacks in asymmetric combat areas. Eye safety limits will be also included as a part of the OLM optimization. Laser module effectiveness will be evaluated against several active infrared targets. Upon completion of this Phase II development optimized laser module design and prototype hardware will be available for transitioning to volume production.
