Research abstract
A secure communications network is sought for use in a plant environment such as Air Forcefs Arnold Engineering Design Center (AEDC) or the Oklahoma City Air Logistics Center (OC-ALC). Many test results conducted at these facilities are classified, so it requires very secure voice and data communications network system. The proposed system shall consist of a set of small, wearable communication devices which interface with way stations located throughout the plant. The proposed system will have the following characteristics: 1) The network should work in a environment with high levels of ambient noise, EMI interference, RF dead zones, grease, dirt, water, and other contaminants. 2) The system must transmit data in a secure manner which is nearly impossible to either intercept or decode. 3) The system should identify and locate individuals wearing communicators within user-defined areas. 4) The system should provide the capability to translate voice to text and record a text-based log to a PC. IAI will develop a set of Wi-Fi-based prototype systems during Phase II to allow AEDC to test and evaluate all functionalities, including noise cancelling voice recognition, VoIP, network security, hands free operations, sensor data logging, issue logging, location tracking, etc., in a relevant environment. BENEFIT: Commercial Potential: The proposed technology has many applications in factories of heavy industries (such as shipbuilding, mining, industrial machinery), chemical plants, electrical stations, and other industries. Department of Homeland Security is very concern about safety of power plants, dams, facility plants and other potential targets such as chemical plants, industrial facilities. Wireless communications for these facilities require better security than normal networks. Military applications: Many military facilities experience strong RF interferences and loud noises. Two government facility of this nature are Air Forcefs Arnold Engineering Design Center (AEDC) and the Oklahoma City Air Logistics Center (OC-ALC). Many test results conducted at these places are classified, so it is very desirable to use secure voice and data wireless communications network system. For the US Navy, the technology developed under this project can be used by flight deck operation personnel aboard aircraft carriers.
