Research abstract

Develop a prototype Wireless Denial of Service (DoS) system (WADAR) to detect, characterize and mitigate DoS phenomenon which threaten 802.11 networks performance. The proposal culminates in a prototype demonstration. The WADAR system focuses threats that range from inadvertent to intentional and from simple to complex RF waveforms. WADAR will provide mitigation based upon detected threats and will be designed for field deployment. The key features of WADAR include: • Addressing the external DoS signal environment at Level 1 (physical layer) allows for the detection and characterization of a wide range of interferers without needing knowledge of encryption or protocol contents. • Implements algorithms and filters in the time and frequency domains to detect and identify diverse jammers and sophisticated threats. • Separates intruders from legitimate network users by detecting and tracking individual wireless transmitters and their behaviors. • Select from a number of wide-band, low cost receiver/processors to provide a small low-cost prototype hosted by a laptop computer. • Addresses emerging wireless networks at other frequencies by incorporating a receiver with a wide frequency range. • The mitigation process accurately characterizes interferers and includes operator alerts and/or automated/semi-automated adjustments to the network ensuring greater immunity to RF DoS threats.
