Research abstract

Applied Technology Associates proposes to develop an Embedded Miniature Motion Imagery Transmitter (EMMIT) based on the latest FPGA platform technology to capture, compress, and transmit multi-resolution, multi-bit-depth, and multi-rate motion imagery in a rugged, low size, weight, and power (SWaP) form factor. The EMMIT will possess the following key features: • Support of camera interfaces such as CameraLink and Gigabit Ethernet with the ability to add future interfaces with minimal physical changes. • Innovative FPGA-based implementation of high performance video compression standards such as H.264 and JPEG-2000 to reduce transmission bandwidth. • Video transmission over high-speed Gigabit Ethernet. • Accurate frame time-stamping aided by an absolute time reference provided by GPS. • Total latency from capture to transmission of less than 100 milli-seconds. • Compliance with Motion Imagery Standards Profile. • The ability to remotely reconfigure the camera and FPGA to accommodate changing mission requirements. The FPGA platform is the best technology for this application due to the high performance it can achieve with parallel signal processing hardware and its ability to reconfigure and adapt to future technology and evolving application requirements. EMMIT will be an innovative technology solution in applications that require the remote capture of motion imagery.
