Research abstract

This proposal addresses the development of a sensor capable of detecting IEDs and EFPs under camouflage and in the presence of urban clutter. The proposed sensor builds upon previous ZAI efforts. The system proposed for this new effort consists of a new full polarimetric (FulPol) array of antenna elements which will provide for an increase in the returned energy from the target and an increase in the capability for target discrimination. The proposed system is a two-channel, forward looking, push broom synthetic aperture radar (SAR) system. The design goal road speed is 20 KPH. The system provides detection capabilities with a single channel on each side of the road in a single channel side looking SAR mode. For targets located in the center of the road, the radar beam widths from the two channels overlap. The received target data from the two channels is combined in an additional and separate higher level of processing, providing a stereoscopic view of the center area. The system provides the range and bearing to all objects, and a compound display of all objects which are +/- 30 degrees from the platform’s heading with a projected 3 inch resolution in both range and cross range.
