Research abstract

The World Adverse Weather Characterization Software (WAWCS) program provides descriptions of the spatial and temporal distributions for the hydrometeor types present in the spectrum of adverse weather that prevails in various regions of the world. The WAWCS model is customized to the specific needs of the aerospace vehicle community. It prescribes the hydrometeor content of a prevailing weather condition, since it is the attributes of the hydrometeors present that determine the hydrometeor impact conditions an aerospace vehicle will experience. Hydrometeor impacts are a concern since they can contribute to aerospace vehicle component damage. Realistic weather characterization has not been available, so WAWCS is a revolutionary approach for establishing relevant aerospace vehicle requirements and performance evaluations. The information WAWCS provides is an essential factor in whether or not an aerospace vehicle will fulfill its mission in less than ideal conditions. WAWCS provides a rationale that allows current and future aviation and missile systems to greatly decrease component costs due to over-designing, while simultaneously assisting in verifying the performance, versatility, and durability of materials in more realistic environments. As the “all weather” military unfolds, computational tools such as WAWCS are crucial for optimal in-theater, all-weather capabilities for all flight systems.
