Research abstract
More soldiers are surviving battlefield injuries than ever before. However, many of the survivors suffer from Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and/or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). These soldiers require care beyond the acute care provided by hospitals. As they transition from acute care into extended care and independent living, they need assistance and supervision to facilitate rehabilitation from injury, and impairment. The proposed system is based on IngeniumCare’s system for care of the elderly and disabled. It consists of a network of fixed and wearable wireless devices placed into the dwelling of the client (i.e. soldier). The sensor network tracks the client’s movement, to ascertain basic health status, to establish performance of daily living activities and to provide assistance through intelligent prompting. Data gathered by the sensors is transmitted wirelessly to a cognitive server and processed to provide an adaptive level of assistance to the client and automated alerts to caregivers. A PDA Cellular Phone gateway allows the client to leave the dwelling and maintain connection to the Point of Care terminal and to the remote monitoring stations. Part of this proposal is a human subjects viability study conducted by Denver Research Institute together with the VA Hospital, Denver, Colorado.
