Research abstract

Corvid Technologies is pleased to present this proposal for the development of IM technology. The objective of this project is to use an innovative light-weight armor design methodology as a guide to IM solutions for large diameter solid rocket motors. This armor solution will mitigate or reduce the violence of reaction in bullet and fragment impact scenarios by providing protection for the system while encanistered within shipping containers and/or canisters/launchers. Bullet and fragment impact stimuli pose a significant threat to SRMs causing unacceptable reaction levels in the propellant. Using common existing ballistic protection solutions can add considerable weight to the overall system and become a logistical burden requiring an increase in capacity for handling equipment as well as vehicles for transportation and deployment. It is critical that ballistic protection solutions be light-weight while maintaining the highest level of protection for the energetics contained within the system. Focusing on high-fidelity, physics-based modeling and simulation to understand the complex interactions in multi-layer armor solutions followed by a thorough evaluation process of ballistics testing, Corvid Technologies is developing a system aimed to provide ballistic protection for MDA representative missile systems at a minimum areal density.
