Research abstract

The next generation Missile Defense Agency (MDA) Airborne Laser (ABL) Chemical Oxygen Iodine Laser (COIL) subsystem needs improved Iodine delivery: 1) engineered Line Replaceable Unit (LRU), 2) safe Iodine supply, 3) decreased payload LRU, 4) able to withstand operational shocks and vibrations, 5) eliminate present safety problems in handling raw crystalline Iodine, 6) eliminate impurities and water, 7) provide precise metering in helium, 8) deliver Iodine on instantaneous order; 9) easy service and replacement. Professional Analytical and Consulting Services, Inc. (PACS) Phase I contract effort for the MDA provided the merit and technical feasibility for providing safer Iodine storage, shipping, handling, and delivery COIL laser. Phase II addresses the nine improvements for the next generation of Iodine delivery to the COIL. Areas for improving the Phase II Iodine performance are decreasing the payload with increased safe Iodine delivery capacity and improving its full-scale manufacturing safety. The one tenth prototype and manufacturing safety with increased capacity for safe Iodine will be delivered in Phase II results. This proposal focuses on Phase II which secures the path to Phase III. Good progress was made on all original Phase I objectives, both the critical and optional objectives and PACS expects similar performance in Phase II.
