Research abstract

The AEgis Technologies Group Inc. proposes to investigate high energy laser and high power microwave instrumentation for ground and airborne targets. The experienced team will identify candidate instrumentation systems; evaluate them against customer-defined requirements and features; and recommend potential systems for further study, development, and implementation in Phase II. We will coordinate with the Air Armament Center (AAC) customer to ensure we include sufficient candidate systems to cover the three classes of directed energy (DE) weapons:  protective, defensive, and offensive. In addition, we will assure our analysis incorporates instrumentation systems that provide sufficient data for improving US DE weapons and hardening US systems and personnel against the effects from opposition DE weapons. We will also investigate current Directed Energy Science and Technology (DE S&T) research projects and select near-term systems with promising technology for inclusion in our initial study. AEgis is participating in four current such projects and has strong ties within the DE S&T office to assist in the identification of the most mature technology. Part of this initial selection process will involve understanding of the kill mechanisms of interest, as well as definition of instrumentation requirements and features. The team will evaluate candidates and recommend effective systems. BENEFIT: Characterize weapons effects of US and opposition force (OPFOR) directed energy (DE) systems, determine the human effects that these systems have, and identify kill mechanisms on fielded equipment and systems. Integrate assessment data with any operational testing that the Air Force Operational Test and Evaluation Center (AFOTEC) may be required to perform to provide a smooth transition into any operational test.  Conduct market research as required to highlight technology transfer opportunities for commercial use of HEL and HPM sensors. Our experience with Directed Energy Science and Technology (DE S&T) projects and deriving commercial applications from military research projects will prove invaluable in this respect. For example, we have discussed using high energy laser irradiance sensors to aid in aligning solar collectors to capture maximum sunlight intensity.)
