Research abstract

Under the proposed Phase II effort, MSI will be to continue to develop and demonstrate a Common Acoustic Communications Module (CACM) using single crystal materials for use in small and large UUV’s. The CACM can be readily adapted for submarine and surface ship installations for command and control and also for transmitting sonar images back to host platforms from UUVs. The CACM designs consist of a broadband single crystal piezocomposite transducer easily scalable for various operating configurations to satisfy difficult bandwidth and directionality requirements. The designs will be optimized to work directly with the current WHOI Micro-Modem and provide broadband performance with the limited power and voltage available in UUV applications.
