Research abstract

In this project, Agiltron, RTI International, and L-3 Communications Electro-Optical Systems will fabricate SiGe digital imaging sensors based on our SWIR imaging technology that will meet or exceed the performance of Gen 3 image intensifier tubes. The SiGe digital imaging sensor consists of a Si-based CMOS imaging sensor with monolithically integrated SiGe photodiodes to extend the cutoff wavelength deep into the SWIR. By introducing SWIR capability to the mature CMOS imaging technology, we uniquely exploit the advantages each technology offers to realize a digital imaging sensor for night vision applications with unprecedented functionality and low cost. In Phase II, we will fabricate four prototype SiGe digital imaging sensors, including at least one with an integrated microdisplay, that will be delivered to the Air Force for incorporation into a relevant night vision system platform. BENEFIT: The SiGe digital imaging sensors are ideally suited for replacement of image intensifier tubes in night vision goggles and devices. Traditional applications of these devices include night vision, surveillance, and passive imaging, since they will allow detection in complete darkness and in harsh conditions. Moreover, the extended spectral coverage of the SiGe digitial imaging sensors beyond 2.0 µm opens up new applications in covert imaging heretofore impossible with legacy SWIR imagers. The SiGe digital imaging sensors will also be critical in supporting military operations in modern urban and cave warfare, either as standalone sensors or in combination with MWIR and LWIR sensors. The radical cost reduction will make it possible to equip every soldier and every vehicle with an imaging camera. The compact size and low power consumption will make the cameras well-suited for UAVs and other remote applications. Other applications of the SiGe digital imaging sensors include covert illumination, range gated imaging, free space communications, hyperspectral imaging, and wavefront sensing, tracking, and ranging for missile threat warning systems.
