Research abstract

The Navy is engaged in efforts to promote the reuse of architectures, designs and specifications across the enterprise. This effort, known as the “Open Architecture” initiative, aspires to achieve for architectures, specifications and designs what the “Open Source” initiative accomplishes for software source code. The Navy has modified the language in contracts to require the delivery of artifacts and has developed repositories, such as the “Software Hardware Asset Reuse Enterprise” (SHARE), which was deployed in August of 2006 by PEO-IWS, to store and protect artifacts while making them available to a larger audience. In this Phase II Trident Systems proposes to implement a prototype of an asset registry and metadata repository that is compliant with the DDMS that provides both security and federated search that is compliant with NCES. The metadata repository will incorporate both asset and artifact metadata for multiple repository products. It will provide services that will be tied into the Net Centric Enterprise Services Federated Search Registry. The entire system will be known as the “Navy Collaborative Engineering and Management System (NCEMS)”. The “federation” of repositories to be prototyped under this effort will allow individual organizations to register within the federate and then allow their repository to execute common services. In addition to the metadata repository, Trident proposes to implement a capability to integrate data from asset artifacts so that analyses and checking can be performed on the integrated data model. The integrated data may also then be accessed in a neutral format for viewing, reporting and translation to other tool formats.
