Research abstract

Monitoring complex shipboard systems to perform preventative maintenance can be a difficult task, but is key to long term sustainment of the system. The Navy Fleet currently has limited capability to perform vibration and modal analysis on shipboard machinery in a timely and non-intrusive manner. Traditionally, the Navy relies on In-Service Engineering Agents (ISEAs) and support personnel traveling to the equipment in question to perform vibration and modal analysis. This approach has several drawbacks that need to be addressed. MSI proposes to further develop its existing VibVue® technology to be capable of addressing the limitations of traditional vibration and modal analyses conducted by the Navy Fleet. Additionally, MSI will develop novel methods for machinery predictive maintenance and real-time detection of anomalous machinery conditions due to external cyber-attack or sabotage.  MSI will explore the feasibility of using low-cost highly-available cameras or camera-equipped phones for collecting the necessary video data thereby greatly increasing accessibility to the technology for Naval Shipyards, Maintenance Centers, Industrial Environments, ISEAs, and Sailors.  Additionally, as part of a dual-track development MSI will evaluate how to integrate other sensors such as accelerometers, thermal cameras, acoustic sensors, etc. into the software system.  These other sensors may provide a trigger for a permanently mounted VibVue® system to start recording during an anomalous event; or VibVue® may provide a trigger for other ship systems such as alarms.
