Research abstract

The primary aims and opportunities of the NexGEN Interface are revolutionary improvements to the OneSAF Behavior Composer and associated processes, to enable military personnel to rapidly and easily build or edit useful OneSAF behaviors for their training and operational purposes. Our NexGEN Interface focuses on military users who range from personnel with basic tactical skills to world-class tacticians, including intuitive collaborative use by Subject Matter Experts. We have developed eight new multimodal, building-block interface components that can be selectively combined and customized to ensure user-centric interfaces. Our definition of interface goes beyond the convention to collectively include the GUIs, visualization/data-views and overall processes to support behavior composition. Four candidate interfaces are planned, including innovative simultaneous use features with the unique capacity of automatic updating edits among different behavior views. Usability for anticipated military personnel drives our overall iterative spiral development processes. Further, we envision direct integration between the NexGEN Behavior-Composer and the OneSAF-MCT for rapid near-real-time development, debugging, and contingency testing with realistic representation of the created/edited behavior within the appropriate scenario running on the MCT. Additional NexGEN-Interface applications include operational command & control systems, bundled system sales with multiple team partners, and new virtual therapy methods for recovering warfighters.
