Research abstract

The Phase I effort for this program exceeded expectations, successfully demonstrating the feasibility of a two-color resonant-cavity LED (RC-LED) emitting at 3.9 µm and 4.6 µm. Extensive modeling and experimental validation confirmed the device architecture, spectral performance, and manufacturability, establishing a strong technical foundation for advancing to Phase II.Phase II will transition from design and modeling to experimental fabrication, ensuring all technical and manufacturing risks are identified and addressed to enable Phase III implementation. The program will follow a rigorous development roadmap, beginning with single-element (two-subpixel) LEDs, followed by 4×4, 6×6, and 8×8 test arrays, culminating in a fully characterized 64×64 array (“money shot”). This structured approach will refine spectral uniformity, minimize cross-talk (<3%), optimize manufacturing processes, and validate RIIC hybridization techniques, ensuring that by the end of Phase II, we will have de-risked all challenges and demonstrated that a 2048×2048 array can be successfully delivered within the earmarked Phase III funds.A major strength of this program is its assembly of leaders spanning the entire electro-optics supply chain, covering device physics, III-V epitaxy, hybridization, system integration, and IR scene projection. The team consists of:Amethyst Research – Device design, program lead, and III-V processingNaval Research Laboratory (NRL) – III-V LED design, modeling, and device testingIntelliEPI – Epitaxial growth of the two-color MWIR RC-LEDsAttollo Engineering – Flip-chip bonding, hybridization, and RIIC integrationSanta Barbara Infrared (SBIR) – System integration and performance validationThis collaboration ensures that technical execution, manufacturability, and system compatibility are rigorously addressed at every stage, mitigating risk and enabling a seamless transition from prototype arrays to large-format deployable systems.By strategically aligning Phase II milestones with a clear Phase III transition path, this program is positioned to deliver next-generation IR scene projectors that will enhance DoD sensor testing, seeker evaluation, chemical sensing, and Hardware-in-the-Loop (HITL) simulations. The resulting technology will provide higher radiance, improved spectral fidelity, and faster frame rates compared to existing resistive-array IRSPs, enabling superior missile defense testing and enhanced operational readiness for the U.S. Navy and all branches of DoD.
