Research abstract

The proposed Phase II effort includes tasks designed to both promote the development of an effective multi-application Hand-held device and to provide a fieldable solution for a relevant corrosion application such as the in-situ monitoring of corrosion on rotorcraft-gearbox-mounting pads using embedded MWM-Arrays. In order to expand on the multi-use aspect of the Hand-held device beyond MWM sensor technology, significant effort will focus on compatibility with existing EC probes. Design work initiated within the Phase I effort will continue into physical layout and prototype fabrication. Functional, performance, manufacturing, and field usability testing and evaluation will be used to develop a plan leading to final product deployment. Detailed specifications for the target application will be defined in order to develop an appropriate strategy for incorporating an MWM-Array. Based on these specifications, an appropriate test setup, simulating relevant application parameters (e.g., materials, corrosive environment, etc.), will be developed as a means of evaluating potential field capabilities. The results will also be used to develop a deployment plan for on-aircraft use.
