Research abstract

Temperature sensors that can monitor temperature directly on various locations in gas turbine engines are necessary for prognosis and diagnosis of engine conditions during operation.  However, reliable temperature sensors working under the harsh conditions of jet propulsion are not currently available.  We propose to develop thin film thermocouples using materials which are stable at high temperatures and under various environments.  A thin film thermocouple will be fabricated and tested for its thermocouple properties in Phase I. BENEFIT: The proposed sensor materials are expected to make a reliable thermocouple for monitoring temperature in gas turbine engines.  The engine maintenance will become more effective and the performance of aircrafts engines will be maximized by using the reliable temperature sensors.  The proposed thermocouple sensors can also be used for monitoring gas temperature from industrial and power plants and help them control the process more efficiently.
