Research abstract

Organizations such as the AOC must manage workflow well in order to coordinate the activity of interdependent cells and allocate network resources. Current Air Force technologies for managing workflow require a large investment of expert time to build and maintain workflow models. This jeopardizes AF missions. Specifically, it encumbers efforts to (1) prioritize network resources for ongoing missions; (2) monitor impaired resources and work around them; (3) coordinate interdependent tasks; (4) assess workflow over time, in order to refine it and improve training on challenging tasks; and (5) design future systems that proactively push information to operators to improve task execution and team coordination. To address this challenge, Aptima is developing MIMOD (Monitoring MIssion MODels for increased Mission Understanding). MIMOD will passively monitor and automatically model the workflow of individuals and teams. MIMOD uses a hierarchical, context driven, hypothesis testing approach to gathering data and constructing workflow models. An interactive display will allow experts to inspect and tune MIMOD workflow models.   BENEFIT: When fully developed, MIMOD will offer the following enhanced capabilities to military and civilian personnel: Monitor impaired or overloaded resources across the socio-technical network responsible for mission execution and share with individuals the inpact of that failure. Provide operators with the resources they need to do their job, e.g. priorities could be assigned to resources supporting a given mission. Assess the consistency of an operators behaviors within the implicit guidelines of command at any given time.Help identify critical coordination points, such as how users are tied together and how they impact each other. Identify redundancies or bottlenecks within the mission by comparing one individuals task and mission models to others within the network. Convey lessons learned in task or mission execution. Smooth the transition of incoming personnel.
