Research abstract

The development of a software product (software development kit, or SDK), based on intelligent projection units (IPUs), is proposed for deployable training systems. The SDK will provide central IPU capabilities: a) continuous calibration with respect to each other, b) seamless rendering and projection of panoramic, dynamic imagery. The SDK will be compatible with several rendering-display configurations. The benefits of the proposed innovation will overcome several deficiencies of current projection and visual training systems, including • the laborious process of manual setup and calibration of projection geometry, • the inability to adapt to even small changes in the display system geometry (e.g., projector shift due to shipboard motion, geometric surface perturbations, etc.) without suspending operation and repeating the setup process, • the requirement for planar or custom display surfaces, and • the need for a pre-set fixed viewpoint. The SDK will compensate for such deficiencies with the automatic geometric and photometric configuration upon startup, both intra- and inter-IPU, as well as the automatic continuous refinement and adjustment of imagery in response to geometric and photometric perturbations of surfaces and/or IPUs. Furthermore, the rendering can be adjusted for static or changing viewpoint.
