Research abstract

The Littoral Reverse Osmosis Module (L-ROM) prototype technology demonstrator is a reverse osmosis water purification module for use in littoral and other waters having a high colloidal (inorganic and natural organic) matter. The principal challenge of this project is to design a system that will operate under severe membrane fouling conditions. Although others have studied this problem, extant RO systems typically rely on upon conventional pretreatment technologies (e.g., coagulation, mixed media filtration modules) and no adequate solution for small to mid-sized systems has been perfected. Based upon the findings and successes of Phase I, MDD will develop a module based on the latest, newly available filter and RO membrane technologies. Under the Phase II efforts, MDD will have three main objectives: 1) To design and construct a technology demonstrator of the L-ROM. The L-ROM will produce potable water in support of LCS and her missions. 2) To test the L-ROM design to satisfy reasonable proof of concept requirements and meet all Navy shipboard requirements for operation in littoral waters. 3) To test and evaluate advanced filtration and pre-filtration techniques
