Research abstract

The Space Network presents severe challenges that will not allow simple reliance on technology transfer from the general Internet. Rather, addressing the problems confronting the Space Network will require the integration of a wide range of developing technologies to support assured, robust communications in a highly dynamic environment. A Network Architecture supporting the vision of the Airborne Network must provide: 1) Support for Autonomous, Disconnected Operations.     2) Services hand-off.    3) Efficiency.  4) Interoperability. The security of space missions depends on many factors, most notably the ability to secure the communications involved in the command and control of spacecraft. The security architecture provides the capability to verify the authenticity of Command and Control (C2) data, and to prevent the unauthorized disclosure of data while being sent through the communications infrastructure.  The network layer has extra requirements placed upon it in space environments. The use of Operating Systems that do not have tightly couple IP stacks such as the Linux OS and IP stack.  These paradigms allow for Aeronix to use/integrate the extensive work of others.   Aeronix proposes to combine delay tolerant protocols, advanced routng protocols, and security in the form of HAIPIS functionality. BENEFIT: The combination of existing network protocols and the development of complimentary protocols for space are also applicable to terrestrial wireless communications.  The same indeterminate link quality occurs in any wireless paradigm.  The protocols developed and formed into a complete secure network stack are directly applicable to first response situations, first responders represent a large global market.
