Research abstract

Intelligent Automation Inc. (IAI) proposes an innovative and inexpensive solutions using In-roadway detectors and embedded pavement flashing light warning system to solve the dilemma zone (DZ) problem. Detection is performed by a pair of inductive loops in each travel lane, 800 to 1200 ft from intersection. The detection system includes prediction of vehicle travel time to the intersection and to the beginning and end of the dilemma zone. Our system would also be able to differntiate by vehicle type (car vs. heavy vehicle). Vehicle-specific warning system is comprised of embedded pavement LED in single line in the center of each lane. Processor activates appropriate LEDs if the vehicle is in dilemma zone. This concept is similar to the actuated embedded pavement lights adjacent to busy crosswalks. To avoid calbe cost, communication is performed wirelessly from loops to processor using COTS equipment. Power to the loop will be provided by a COTS battery-solar array system. The control algorithm will incorporate both predictions of when vehicles may be in the dilemma zone and some basic signal control protocols (e.g., phase hold to extend green beyond max). Our proposed system is inexpensive, low risk and will provide addtitional safety for heavy vehicles.
