Research abstract

High altitudes both make heat rejection difficult and impose power plant constraints that add significant waste heat to be rejected. The result is a challenging transport problem we can most effectively attack by making use of the longer mean free paths at stratospheric altitudes and the short length scales of particular multiphase ceramic materials to enhance electrically the natural heat convection processes. The initial survey will identify and attempt (i) to optimize the physical dimensions of these devices relative to typical boundary layers and accommodation lengths, and (ii) to establish the electrical operating points, duty cycle, and dynamic ranges.
