Research abstract

The Ceramic Matrix Composite (CMC) community has a pervasive need for rapid, low cost evaluation of CMC fiber coatings to be used in the turbine and exhaust sections of JSF aircrafts. Current electron-beam based techniques (e.g. SEM, TEM, Auger, XPS) for evaluating CMC fiber coatings are slow, expensive, and destructive in nature. Koosur Technologies Inc. (KTI) has proposed a laser based instrument, which can rapidly, non-invasive characterize the thin film coating of CMC fibers. In the Phase I, we have demonstrated the principles. In Phase II, we will demonstrate the capabilities of the instrument and validate the instrument at CMC manufacture procession site.
