Research abstract

Polymer matrix (e.g., IM7/5250-4) and epoxy-resin (IM7/977-3) composites are desirable for high performance aerospace structures including blade seals, spars, and fairings due to the significant weight reductions that can be achieved while attaining sufficient strength.  Currently, such components cannot be affordably made from advanced composite materials, due to highly inefficient and time-consuming autoclave curing processes.  Creares innovation is a novel Laser-Assisted Curing (LAC) system that completely eliminates the need to insert the part in an autoclave and that integrates with the fiber placement head on our partners composite fiber placement/winding machine.  During the Phase I project, we will assemble the LAC system, complete pre-production tests on composite parts, and design the system for integration on our commercialization partners line of winding machines.  During Phase II, we will complete the system design, integration, testing, and transition the technology. BENEFIT: As composite materials continue to displace metal in airframe structures, the key focus is on enabling technologies that increase the affordability and quality of the manufacturing process.  Our innovation will enable the increased use of composites in military aircraft, commercial aircraft, and automobiles.  Additionally, the lower cost of processing advanced composites will increase their marketability and enable product improvements that have been, heretofore, too costly to implement.
