Research abstract

In this Small Business Innovative Research Phase I program, SciGenesis proposes to develop a multi-mechanistic cosmetic coating for the protection of military and first responders from flash fire and other intense thermal flux scenarios. Coatings will utilize a combination of mechanisms to increase the time required to cause a second degree burn from 2 seconds to 4 seconds, corresponding to a heat flux reduction of 40 kW/m2 to 15 kW/m2 and providing precious time for personnel to respond. The Phase I technical effort includes the synthesis and selection of film constituents and testing of prototype protective coatings. Initial screening is based on formulation chemical compatibility and physical stability. Preferred compositions are subjected to aggressive testing in simulated flash fire scenarios. Delivered via camouflage face paint, this coating is designed to posses all the characteristics of a cosmetic product, e.g. hypoallergenic, easy to apply, long-wearing, convenient storage and low odor, while meeting the rigorous performance requirements demanded by the application. SciGenesis has already initiated contacts within the chemical and cosmetic industries that will provide technical guidance and support the transition from Phase I research program to Phase II/Phase III development and commercialization.
