Research abstract

As part of the “One Fuel Forward” approach to fuel logistics, the Army is seeking to develop more efficient, safer JP-8 burners for griddle appliances in field kitchens. To meet the Army’s needs, several technologies are needed: efficient atomizers for vaporizing JP-8 fuel; a flameless combustor for safe, efficient oxidation; a griddle technology that maintains a uniform griddle temperature distribution at variable heat load; and recuperator technology to utilize exhaust waste heat for maximum system efficiency. Creare has previously developed fuel atomization, catalytic combustion, and recuperator technologies that can be integrated into an efficient JP-8 burner suitable for the Army’s kitchen appliances. In addition, we have teamed with the leading manufacturer of steam griddle technology. During Phase I, we will focus on developing a single JP-8 powered catalytic burner and interface it with a commercial steam-based griddle. During Phase II, we will develop a dual-temperature griddle system through a side-by-side design of two burners. Additionally, we will optimize the system efficiency through the development of a lightweight recuperator. A modular design approach will also ease the transition of our technology into other kitchen appliances, such as ovens, kettles, and heated sinks.
