Research abstract

Current sonar systems have not taken advantage of technology advances which have made it possible for significant active sonar improvements in size, weight, power and cost. Our phase I effort identified several key technologies to increase the power density (i.e. increased performance in reduced volume / weight) and reduce the cost of key transmit components such as power supplies and amplifiers. Additionally, this effort is also focused on broadening the applicability of these solutions through the use of obsolescence-resistant implementations of open system interface standards. The Phase II effort will perform analysis and critical item testing to verify the suitability of technologies identified during phase I before constructing prototype units of key assemblies. The performance of these assemblies will be fully characterized via bench top testing as well as in-water testing with complex transducer loads.
