Research abstract

Dynamic supply of clean, reliable electrical power in remote locations or during emergencies is increasingly required by today’s military. Tactical vehicles (such as HMMWVs) have been retrofitted with high-power alternators to create self-mobile, low-power generators but lack the sophisticated electronics needed to safely and reliably coordinate this output with other vehicles to provide power levels required by many forward bases/hospitals. Therefore, a system that converts ubiquitous, tactical vehicles into a distributed power-supply system is needed. MillenWorks is developing an intelligent, scalable, and safe Grid Interactive Vehicle Exportable Power (GIVE-Power) system to meet this need. By seamlessly converting vehicle fleets into go-anywhere exportable power micro-grids, GIVE-Power will provide the dynamic power systems required on today’s battlefield. GIVE-Power simultaneously coordinates power output and optimizes system efficiency by dynamically adjusting the power split between multiple vehicles. Increasing efficiency means GIVE-Power provides a higher power-to-fuel-consumption ratio than other systems, thus decreasing logistical burdens and operational cost. GIVE-Power’s multi-layered communication and control architecture provides a robust framework for integration of traditional gensets, high-power alternator equipped vehicles, and next-generation hybrid-electric and fully-electric vehicles into a cohesive power network. Therefore, MillenWorks’ GIVE-Power system addresses both the Army’s current and future needs for intelligently controlled, reliable electrical power.
