Research abstract

JRD, Raytheon, and Tuskegee University have successfully completed the Phase I effort for design and development of an advanced solid state cryocooler for infrared sensor components. In addition, it was decided that the lowest-risk path forward for Phase II is the two-stage hybrid pulse tube / Joule-Thomson design. These initial calculations predict that efficiency potential of the solid state compressor based pulse tube concept is competitive with present day cryocooler technology and supports the continued development of this project towards a commercially viable product. The Phase II effort will build on the Phase I success with goals to: (1) construct and test a proof of concept device, (2) correlate the thermodynamic models to guide the development of optimized designs, (3) advance the solid state compressor construction techniques to achieve the desired system weight and volume, and (4) perform necessary studies to develop a low cost, flight ready, and manufacturing-ready solid state cryocooler system. Based on these goals, follow on work in Phase III will lead to fully integrated cryocooler system utilizing the solid state compressor to achieve the desired goals of this program.
