Research abstract
In this Phase II proposal, MetroLaser and Worcester Polytechnic Institute plan to develop an extremely versatile optical inspection suite to aid in the manufacture, assembly, and inspection of freeform optical components that are not easily inspected with conventional interferometry. After examining the critical manufacturing problems and associated inspection needs for such components, including manufacturing, assembly and complete optical characterization, an instrument suite was specified during a phase I study. An experimental and theoretical examination then established the feasibility of three separate measurement modules required for inspection. This proposal provides a roadmap for development of a unique combination of optical diagnostics that enables characterizing a surface figure and quality in near real time with two different, robust methods while monitoring the vibrational characteristics of the manufacturing tools to identify sources of degradation.
