Research abstract
Many industries have transitioned to composite materials because of their superior strength-to-weight ratio. The composites are often bonded; however, if the bonded joint is weak, the advantage is lost. To date there is no robust, practical method for measuring the strength of a bonded joint. Many industries would benefit from the ability to make such a measurement including both the commercial and military aerospace industries where bond integrity is critical to structural component performance. Broken bonds could compromise public safety and result in death. The objective is this research project is to continue the development of a device to measure bond strength. In Phase I, feasibility of a novel method of measuring bond strength was demonstrated. In Phase II a working prototype of a portable bond testing system intended to assure the bond strength of composite bonded joints will be developed and demonstrated.
