Research abstract

The lack of a reliable analysis package is seen as a weak link in the thermal battery design, development, and qualification process. ENSER has developed and refined dynamic electrical and thermal performance models based on fundamental electrochemical and heat transfer principles. These models are employed at the start of the battery development, adding value early while saving time and cost as well as reducing technical risk. Mechanical anomalies would typically not be seen until very late in the development (Design Verification Test Phase). As development times and budgets decrease and performance expectations increase, the thermal battery design process can be greatly enhanced with reliable mechanical analysis tools. This capability will be particularly valuable for supporting strategic defense applications wherein 'mission assurance' requirements are of paramount improtance, and extensive analyses are required to assure adequate design margins under 'absolute worst-case conditions'.
