Research abstract
We propose to demonstrate an innovative concept that is capable of extended operational durability and reduced lifecycle maintenance for UPS systems. Currently, all widely-adopted power supply systems for UPS are lead acid batteries. Our proposed method opens a new way for UPS power supplying by taking advantage of the high energy content in Zinc-Air fuel cells and the high power capability in Nickel-Zinc batteries. This new power supply system is anticipated to supply power orders of magnitude longer than lead acid batteries. Phase I analysis demonstrated combination of Zinc-Air/Ni-Zn will allow to combine combination makes the entire system low cost, easy to maintain and environmental-friendly. Phase I comparison analysis of different power sources demonstrated that besides its high performance, Zn-Air/Ni-Zn technology is the safest, most reliable and lowest costing portable power source. In Phase II, suggested UPS systems will be designed, manufactured, and tested. Overall system configuration and characteristics will be optimized on the base of this test.
