Research abstract

Aviation mishaps in the Navy and Marine Corps cost $677 million, and were responsible for 40 fatalities in 2005 despite the significant training resources expended by the Navy (Naval Safety Center Annual Review, 2005). These mishaps are thoroughly investigated, but their findings usually fail to propagate through sufficient channels to generate mishap prevention via training curricula. This disconnect results in failed opportunities to prevent future incidents. To rectify this shortcoming, Aptima is proposing CROSSTAFF (Creating Requirements for Operational Safety Support Through Analysis of Flight-simulation Fidelity) to provide a direct link between safety analysts and developers of simulator-based training. CROSSTAFF will provide the nexus through a shared work platform and assist both safety analysts and training developers perform their tasks. More importantly, the tool will facilitate the interaction of these two disciplines and generate training requirements derived from safety critical findings.
