Research abstract

Titanium’s high strength and low density make it an exceptional material for numerous military applications. However, titanium aerospace components are notoriously expensive and difficult to machine at high speeds, driving up per-part costs, and limiting application of this material where it could be of substantial benefit to the warfighter. During this project, we developed a unique approach to cool cutting tools called the Indirect Cooling System (ICS). We have demonstrated that our ICS approach greatly extends tool life and enables substantial processing speed increases, which are critical to reduce cycle time and cost. We demonstrated the viability of our ICS approach and developed strategies to integrate our innovation with commercial machine tools. During the proposed project, we will complete additional integration activities and program-specific technology demonstrations, fostering technology insertion.
