Research abstract

The applicant will develop a compact bi-directional converter with galvanic isolation for linking the power buses of the zones of future Navy ships. The converter can be used to reconfigure the zones to minimize the number of zones taken out of service due to damage or other type of failure. High power density is accomplished by using SiC power devices, high frequency magnetics with nano-crystalline material, and elevated device temperature. The overall converter system uses an innovative control strategy and is built in modules to achieve flexibility and redundancy.
