Research abstract

To extend Warfighter range, and improve readiness, the USMC needs a better sleeping bag for extreme cold conditions. The current Modular Sleep System (MSS) has enough insulation for 4 hours of rest at 0 F, weighs 10.3 lbs, and occupies 1780 cu.in when stored. Marines need a better sleep system that is lighter, less bulky and safe for use to –40 F. S. D. Miller and Associates will continue its development of the eXtreme Marine Sleep System (X-MSS) which is expected to be 30% lighter, 42% more compact, and 25% warmer than the MSS. SDMA’s development is using a proprietary insulation to reduce weight and volume, and improve wet weather performance. This Phase II research program will develop the technologies needed to reduce the weight and stored volume of sleep systems, then apply these technologies to design the X-MSS for use between 0 F and -40 F. Down selection of the X-MSS features will be made after two winter field testing programs and in collaboration with the USMC.
