Research abstract

The lack of correlation and common track numbering between the multiple data sources reporting Ballistic Missile events has proven repeatedly to be a major issue across all levels of Air and Missile Defense. This premise has been exemplified in both Operational and Live, Virtual Constructive (LVC) environments. The key to utilizing this data effectively for Battle Management is turning the data into an accurate and coherent picture of the BattleSpace in near real-time. By using a distributed architecture to broadcast correlated missile launch data, the data can be made available to all systems, thus providing a common foundation for any commander, operator or system to base analysis upon. This effort is intended to produce a track based correlation algorithm that will provide a cleaner, more concise picture of Ballistic Missile events to the Missile Defense Warfighter within 24 months. Phase I has successfully proven the validity of the initial algorithms and architecture proposed to address this issue. The algorithms developed during Phase I are flexible enough to treat the general case of N sensors and could thus be leveraged during Phase II to produce a capability that would support all BMD systems utilized within a layered defense design.
