Research abstract

Triton Systems, Inc is meeting the needs of the Missile Defense Agency (MDA) for reduced weight and higher performance Ballistic Missile Defense System (BMDS) assets. Triton will integrate a synergistic lightweight radiation shielding system to prevent radiation induced upsets in commercial off-the-shelf electronic components exposed to an exoatmospheric nuclear environment, defined by the HAENS Standard. Triton’s radiation shielding system is designed to synergistically mitigate X-rays, thermal and epithermal neutrons, beta particles, and SGEMP-causing electrons. At the end of Phase II, a prototype of the system will be demonstrated in a radiation environment. The weight, strength, and thermal properties of the radiation shielding system will also be characterized. The experiments and tests proposed in this Phase II program are designed to collect the information needed for the technology to achieve a Technology Readiness Level of 6.
