Research abstract

This proposal describes the approach to be undertaken in the implementation and demonstration of innovative system architectures, algorithms, and design concepts for a prototype Real-time Active Sensor Target Scene Generator to test Fuzing Radars with enhanced ground proximity recognition processing. Various approaches have been investigated in Phase I of this program, with a focus on system architectures, algorithms, and design concepts which address signal capture, modulation, and generation of wideband, complex waveforms. Current implementations are limited in their capabilities to produce multiple reflection points due to constraints imposed through the inflexibility of the architecture. The proposed architecture consists of a high-speed DRFM mated with Complex Target Synthesizer Boards (CTSB) to convolve a sampled radar pulse with a range profile of the engagement region. The range profile will be updated pulse-to-pulse to reflect changing sensor position and target aspect. The scalable architecture provides the ability to synthesize complex radar scenes that can be represented with the range resolution and range extent provided by the CTSB implementation. The evolution of developmental sensors to larger bandwidth compressed waveforms with frequency agility drives the focus on real-time implementation and wide bandwidth capabilities. The cost and benefit of the demonstrated approaches will be assessed.
