Research abstract

Physical Sciences Inc. proposes to continue development of a software tool that is capable of defining the selection and placement of a constellation of standoff and point sensors for the protection of base facilities and forces deployed in the field. The network will be defined using an algorithm that optimizes the collective performance of the sensors as a function of deployment need, geography, weather, threats and required warning times. The approach is based on models that address coverage optimization under the constraints of real sensor performance characteristics, sensor availability and deployment cost. Sensor performance parameters such as detection and false alarm probabilities are generated based on known sensitivity, selectivity, vulnerability, and propensities for false alarm for each sensor as a function of likely environmental factors influencing the deployment. The sensors to be incorporated in the model are represented by Point (chemical: LCD-3 and biological: JBPDS) and Standoff (chemical: JSLSCAD/AIRIS-WAD and biological: JBSDS). In the Phase I program the feasibility of this approach was demonstrated for a constellation of sensors protecting several key facilities on a simulated US Army base. The Phase II software suite will incorporate a Geographical Information Systems platform as the basis for developing the sensor deployment solutions.
