Research abstract

Due to the limitations of today’s Acoustic Communication (ACOMM) systems there has been an increased interest in an Optical Communication (OCOMM) solution. Unlike Acoustic systems, Optical Communication systems have the ability to handle higher bandwidths, and are inherently more difficult to detect (better suited for covert operations). Based on the Navy’s need for an OCOMM system for both ASW and MIW applications SA Photonics has developed Neptune, a high-bandwidth, low-power, untethered, underwater optical communication system. Neptune can sense seawater conditions and adjust operating wavelength and modulation format depending on water conditions. Neptune can auto-negotiate bitrate and, coupled with our developments in Fast Steering Mirror Technology, can acquire and transmit/receive large data packets with minimal dwell times to maximize the number of bits per watt of power expended, which is especially critical for autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) and submarine installations.
