Research abstract

The goal of this effort is to develop a prototype training system that provides entry level Computer Network Defense (CND) analysts with the ability to learn fundamental concepts and practice their skills, within a compelling environment that offers network simulation and a gaming interface. The system will provide both standard Computer Based Training (CBT) for instruction in basic concepts, as well as virtual vignettes for applying those concepts and honing skills within a practical exercise. Because this training environment blends CBT with simulated scenarios, we refer to our system as SimBLEND - Simulation-Based Learning Environment for Network Defense. The SimBLEND system will be designed to interface with network simulations so that the student can experience new simulation-driven scenarios throughout the training experience. The system will incorporate a learning management system to automatically score performance, track progress and recommend training modules for remediation or advancement. In Phase II we will: finalize and prioritize student and instructor functional requirements; refine and document the system architecture including recommendations for hardware and software technologies for implementing the architecture; build a prototype; demonstrate the prototype at regular intervals soliciting feedback from students and instructors; and develop a roadmap to military and commercial transition
