Research abstract

The objective of the proposed Advanced Sensor Optimal Placement (ASOP) Planning Tool is to develop a facility for Naval planners to rapidly plan, optimize, assess, and validate tasking of sensor and communication assets to support operational missions. Phase I demonstrated the feasibility of developing an ASOP Planning Tool that can be rapidly fielded to support ISR planning. The technical objective of Phase II is to leverage advanced non-linear constrained optimization and visualization techniques. These techniques have been used to develop similar capabilities, within a robust simulation architecture environment comprised of detailed models of C4ISR and targeted systems. The approach is to quickly develop an initial capability that can immediately provide value to the mission planners yet support incremental enhancements to incorporate more advanced capabilities as required. The development of the ASOP Planning Tool will leverage PSI’s experience in developing planning tools for tactical sensor and communication systems as well as PSI’s development environment including hierarchical model support, interactive graphics, and automated non-linear constrained optimization. PSI’s advanced graphics facilities for supporting 2D and 3D visualization will be exploited to provide an intuitive interactive user interface.
