Research abstract

The objective of this Phase II project is to design, implement and demonstrate an innovative secure cognitive wireless network via MIMO processing and polyphase carrier interferometry spreading spectrum technology. Specifically, a cooperative spectrum sensing algorithm will provide a virtual RF topology map of a wireless network in a hostile environment. Next, with the aid of the virtual RF topology, a polyphase carrier interferometry waveform is designed to achieve anti-jamming capability. Furthermore, a jamming avoidance RF watermarking technology is implemented to significantly improve the anti-jamming performance of the wireless network. A smart antenna array is integrated with the RF watermarking technology to provide an oscillating beamforming and offer transmit diversity in addition to frequency diversity, leading to superb performance improvement. Most importantly, multiple smart antenna arrays are combined to create a virtual grid, generating a distributed, prioritized RF watermarking technology. As a direct result of this innovative research and development, the proposed wireless network not only provides high performance and high security against passive eavesdroping, but also eliminates the vulnerability against active jamming from adversaries. In addition to theoretical and numerical analysis, the proposed cognitive wireless network will also be implemented in hardware via DSP/FPGA/SDR boards to demonstrate its superb performance and exceptional security feature.
