Research abstract

The use of real world portable devices such as binoculars, helmet mounted displays, and night vision goggles is expanding, providing today's warfighter with greater amounts of visual information to process in real time. Training the soldier to become proficient with each of these complex systems is crucial to their effectiveness. Training devices lack the immersive, real 3D world to stimulate such systems, requiring simulation engineers to make tradeoffs. To achieve high resolution imagery necessary for reasonable replication of imagery, cables have been employed to provide the bandwidth required. Such tethers, however, restrict user range of motion and therefore training effectiveness. Recent advances if radio frequency (RF) commercial technologies improve greatly on past RF performance, and now provide the leap in available bandwidth necessary for delivering multiple high resolution video streams to portable devices. This proposal takes advantage of these new RF data links, and provides a highly adaptable solution to allow future advancements to be readily incorporated into multi-player portable training systems.
