Research abstract

UES, Inc., in collaboration with the University of Cincinnati, proposes to extend the science and application base of the laser shock-induced spallation modeling tool from coupons to real-life work pieces. The specific implementation involves three steps. Firstly, we plan to incorporate the effects of material structure into the material and spallation models developed in Phase I. Secondly, a comprehensive experimental plan will be developed and executed for the purpose of validation of the model. Specifically, we propose to validate the pressure model and effect of the LSP pressure and specimen dimensions and geometry on the spallation and residual stress evolution by designing and implementing a set of experiments, coupled with nondestructive and metallurgical evaluation, involving both coupons and a component (namely, airfoil). Finally, we propose to demonstrate the commercial feasibility of the developed modeling approach. We anticipate the delivery of the model in the form of a user-friendly modeling package that can be used with the commercial finite element modeling software such as ABAQUS and LS-DYNA3D.
